The houses on Liberia’s Calle Real and in the La Cananga neighborhood might be over 100 years old, but they still retain their beauty as a treasure of Liberian architecture.
If we entered these homes 50 years ago, we would find a number of families that live in dozens of rooms around the central patio.
Today, these houses are tall, spacious, and full of details in wood and tile. They are occupied by smaller families that reuse the space while trying to keep the homes’ past intact and adjusting them to their current needs. Others have become hotels, hostels, and restaurants.
The Voice of Guanacaste spoke with William Monge, director of the Centro de Patrimonio (Heritage Center), to get a better idea of the provenance of these eight architectural features that make these houses so picturesque.
