Short but substantial. This describes the video made by the Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT) to promote the country’s tourism activity in U.S. and Canadian markets.

The one-minute film is being presented as a commercial just before the beginning of movies on 1345 screens located in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Denver, Atlanta, West Palm Beach, Dallas and Houston, from April to June, as well as in Montreal, Canada in November, according to information from ICT.

Andres Madrigal, photographer and audiovisual producer for the magazine Costa Rica Traveler, participated in shooting the film by director Patrick Pierson from the U.S. company Drive Thru, which was contracted by ICT to film the advertisement.

Madrigal told VON that they shot more than 40 hours of film, in addition to taking numerous photographs last year in October and November, visiting around 18 places throughout the entire country. The places were selected beforehand by ICT, including Nosara, where they filmed people taking yoga classes, although this footage doesn’t appear in the commercial.

“I arrived in Nosara wanting to shoot the beach (Guiones) but the list sepcifically said that we should record yoga, so we did that and later we didn’t have enough time to film more since we had to keep traveling,” commented Madrigal.

In addition, the photographer related that the film crew was composed of nine people and that during the filming they used six video cameras, including a rather unusual one, which was installed on a small remote-control helicopter to record areal shots.

According to Madrigal, the objective of this first installment of the project was to build a stock of high-quality photographs and video that cover practically the entire national territory, showing the natural and touristic beauties of the areas.

ICT estimated that this first commercial will be played around 8 million times in North American teathers, which will guarantee ample exposure to one of the top markets in prospective international tourism.
