Cell Phone and House Thief Gang Brought Down by OIJ

Four suspects linked to the robberies of at least 30 houses and businesses in Nicoya, Cañas, Tilaran, Santa Cruz and Osa has been given preventive prison terms of three months by the Penal Court (Juzgado Penal) of Cañas, according to the press department of the Judicial Authority (Poder Judicial).

The thefts took place between March of 2013 and March of this year, generally at night, and the majority of the houses robbed were of foreigners.

The suspects were arrested during simultaneous operations by the Judicial Investigative Police (OIJ) on Friday morning, March 14 in Tilarán and Cañas in Guanacaste as well as in Patarrá, Torremolinos and Río Azul, and two others linked to the gang are already in prison on other charges.

From the suspects’ homes, the authorities confiscated TV screens, cellular phones, video cameras, about 2 million colones ($4000) in cash and a 38-caliber revolver.
