Double Quake Woke Nicoyans Up

A strong earthquake occurred on Sunday morning, July 6, at 5:42 local time. According to the National Seismological Network of the University of Costa Rica (UCR), the quake registered a magnitude of 5.2 on the Richter scale and was located 1 kilometer west of Quebrada Honda of Nicoya. 

Minutes later, at 5:52 a.m., there was a new event with magnitude 3.7 located 2 kilometers west of Mansion of Nicoya.

Locals reported that the quake felt strong. “It was terrible. I was getting ready to go to work when it happened. The house shook strongly from side to side and there was nothing to do,” said Anais Castro, who lives in Corralillo of Nicoya.

“I was asleep and I felt like I had been thrown out of bed,” commented Milena Matarrita. 

The districts of Nosara and Samara also reported that the quake was strong. “Over here, the residents indicate that it felt strong and it took them by surprise because at that time, most were in bed,” said Betsy Chavarria, who lives in Garza of Nosara. 

Despite the magnitude of the earthquake, there were no reports of material damage or human injury. For the moment, everything is calm in Nicoya. 

Reports indicate that the earthquake was felt in some surrounding cantons, such as Hojancha, Nandayure, Bagaces and Santa Cruz.
