Eat against cancer

According to the National Institute of Statistics and Census (in Spanish, INEC) the second-leading cause of death for Guanacastecans is cancer. You probably know of family members who have suffered from this. The prevention of this illness can start with what you eat, especially the consumption of certain foods.

Among the most basic recommendations that specialists offer regarding cancer include eating at least five portions of fruit and vegetables each day. The greatest part of antioxidants come from the pigments that give food its color, so the more colorful your dish, the better.

Proper fiber consumption will help to prevent colon and breast cancer: look for alternative whole-grain foods like whole-wheat breads and, in general, flour-based foods that are made with whole-grain flour. Beans are great for preventing these kinds of cancer.

According to data from the Ministry of Health, the main types of cancer that Guanacastecans suffer from are skin and prostate cancer in men and breast and skin cancer in women.

Betacaratines and vitamin C are antioxidants that you should include in your daily diet to protect your skin. You’ll find these elements in foods like papaya, carrots, squash, broccoli, and mango. Vitamin C is present in acidic fruits like orange, mandarin, pineapple, and lime.

When it comes to breast cancer, you can eat soya products like tofu and tempeh because they have phitoestrogens (isoflavons) that help to reduce the risk of this sickness. It’s also important to consume enough calcium, which is mainly present in lactates (at least two portions per day). This nutrient helps to control the spread of breast cancer cells.

Prostate cancer can be prevented by eating cooked tomatoes. These contains licopene (the pigment that give it its red color). When it’s cooked, the tomato’s licopene is activated and helps to prevent this kind of cancer.

Selinium is a potent antioxidant that also protects against prostate cancer. It can be found in foods like fish, seafood, and seeds.

Remember that what you eat will help you prevent cancer, not cure it. The most effective recipe against cancer includes physical activity, healthy foods, and proper mental health.
