The bull riding community of Costa Rica is in mourning. On Thursday, March 19, one of the most impressive and popular riding bulls died: El Malacrianza.

Yamileth Rodriguez, owner of the animal, confirmed that the beast died in the early morning after a respiratory arrest at Hacienda La Nueva Esperanza in Garza of Nosara.

“Today when I woke up, I was informed that the animal had died. He was a great bull. He was already older and was sick from parasites, although he was already recovering and he was looking good, but being ridden so much had taken its toll already,” Rodriguez said.

Malacrianza got his start on the bull riding circuit in 2002, weighing more than 700 kilograms (1550 pounds). The fierceness of the animal was one of his great attractions, being feared by many since two riders unfortunately died when they climbed onto him.

In 2014, he was retired from the bull riding ring and was used as a stud bull in Garza, where any tourist who passed by did not miss the opportunity to take a photo of him.

To Rodriguez, the beast was more than a pet. He was almost like a member of the family.

“The truth is that his death really hurts me. We all had a very special affection for him, but on the other hand I know he is resting now,” said the owner.

According to Cristina Rojas Rodriguez, veterinarian and member of the family that owned him, the animal will be buried in Garza. However, he will undergo a taxidermy process to preserve his skin.
