On May 2, the country’s new municipal syndics will take on their responsibilities. In some districts, they were re-elected and in others, there are new faces.
The municipal syndic is the direct representative of each district of the canton. His or her function is to look out for the interests of the people of that district.
The syndic has a voice in the municipal council but no vote. Syndics are elected simultaneously with all of the municipal authorities, two years after the national elections.
For the 2016-2020 period, 23 women and 35 men will serve as syndics in the province.
The party that won the most syndics in Guanacaste was the National Liberation Party (PLN- Partido Liberación Nacional) and the ones that got the least were the Libertarian Movement Party (PML- Partido Movimiento Libertario) and the Christian Social Republican Party (PRSC- Partido Republicano Social Cristiano).
