Homemade Aroma is the Secret of Virginia’s Ice Cream in Nicoya

Some 40 years ago, Virginia Quesada Gamboa entered the world of business. Better known as “Doña Vicky,” she says that at the time Nicoya was emptier and that the business environment was more family-oriented. According to her, Nicoyans have known her for her entire life, as well as the quality of her products. She is very meticulous with her recipes and does not use artificial ingredients.

If you find yourself passing by or need to order something, Virginia’s Ice Cream Shop (Heladeria Virginias) offers homemade desserts and ice cream.

To sweeten up your day, you can order a serving of tres leches (white cake with a sweet cream topping), torta chilena (thin, crisp wafers separated by layers of dulce de leche) or chocolate cake for ₡1,400 ($2.80). Savory empanadas made with ham, heart of palm or cheese cost ₡700 ($1.40).

Those looking for something bigger can order a whole cake. The cold peach cake costs ₡20,000 ($40) and is famous for its homemade whipped cream, strawberries, cherries and a splash of peach juice. 

Ice creams treats on a stick cost ₡375 ($0.75). They are made without additives and with real fruit. Flavors include coconut, strawberry, cream, natilla, chocolate-peanut, blackberry, cas and fruits.

Heladeria Virginia’s is located in downtown Nicoya, 125 meters to the east of Coopealianza. Food is only available for carry out, but for years that hasn’t stopped people from visiting her little window to satisfy a craving.
