Immerse yourself in cinema and culture with the International Film Festival in Nicoya

The Costa Rica International Film Festival (CRFIC- Costa Rica Festival Internacional de Cine) will take place in Nicoya from August 20 to 22 with workshops and film presentations for Guanacastecans. The events will be held as part of the ninth annual festival’s roadshow phase, which tries to highlight the need to offer more access to cinema in places outside the Greater Metropolitan Area (GMA).

Nicoya is one of eight communities around the country— and the only one in Guanacaste— that the festival will visit during its roadshow. The project organizers chose the colonial canton for two main reasons: people there don’t have access to movie theaters in the area and they say that Nicoyans showed great interest in participating in more film showings.

The festival is organized by the Costa Rican Center for Cinematographic Production of the Ministry of Culture and Youth (MCJ- Ministerio de Cultura y Juventud). The first phase was focused on presenting films in areas with movie theaters, like Liberia.

The project’s artistic director, Fernando Chaves, explained that the new activities try to build enthusiasm among people who live far from the capital and have little physical access to the arts, so that they watch more films and can better analyze the pieces.

We are excited to be able to share this type of art with people. We want to share these subject matters that generate conversation and emotions,” he said.

That’s why they’ll not only show mostly national short and feature films, but will also give two film appreciation workshops.

In 2018, the developer Serviglobal, in charge of the administration of Plaza Amara in Nicoya, announced that they were interested in having a movie theater in their shopping center’s facilities. However, a year later, the idea was discarded after disagreements with the interested movie theater chain.

At that time, through a market study, Serviglobal discovered that Nicoya was a good place to set up a movie theater since it would also attract people from other communities such as Hojancha, Santa Cruz and Nandayure.

The Film Center discovered the same thing in a study it conducted to choose the areas where it would present the film series.

We did preliminary research for two months and we believe that Nicoya is an interesting area with many opportunities to do film presentations like the ones we bring,” said Chaves.

In addition to Nicoya, the festival will visit Upala, Turrialba, Pococi, Bribri, San Cristobal (Cartago) and La Palma in Puerto Jimenez.

Admission will be totally free for everyone. However, to attend any of the scheduled events, you need to make reservations in advance via WhatsApp: +506 7098-4455.

All of the events will have the necessary health measures, such as distancing and disinfection for each film session. The festival organizers would like to remind you that if you feel flu-like symptoms, it would be better to not attend.
