World-class lyrical poetry is coming to Guanacastecan classrooms at the upcoming International Poetry Festival, to be held in the province from Sept. 30-Oct. 10.

The festival takes place in 15 locations throughout the country. In Guanacaste, official locations are Liberia and Nicoya. Tours are also planned for schools in Abangares, Cañas, Hojancha and Nandayure.

The Voice of Guanacaste is an organizer of the event and will participate in school tours to promote reading and poetry as learning and human development tools.

The festival will have a special feature this year in that each poet will publish her or his own book of verses. In total, 19 international poets and two national poets will participate.

International poets come from Saudi Arabia, Chile, China, Colombia, El Salvador, Spain, Guatemala, Honduras, Italy, Nicaragua, Mexico, Palestine, Panama, Peru, Dominican Republic and Sudan.

Rónald Bonilla, winner of the Magón National Culture Award in 2015, and Angélica Murillo are the two poets representing Costa Rica at the festival.

Festival Executive Producer Rebeca Bolaños said this is the second time the festival will take place in Guanacaste, and attendance is expected to be greater than last year.

“We’re going to bring world-class poetry to Guanacaste communities, and we want children and youth to be a part of the festival. We hope to see greater attendance at the workshops,” Bolaños said.

This important event is organized by the Casa de Poesía Foundation and is a result of a collaboration between authors Norberto Salinas Ollé, Rodolfo Dada Fumero and Julieta Dobles.
