Boys and girls between the ages of 6 and 12 are invited to learn soccer skills and have fun at a soccer festival in the soccer field in the plaza of Samara this Sunday, February 16, beginning at 7:30 a.m.

The festival is being sponsored by the Costa Rican Soccer Federation along with the Soccer Association International Federation (FIFA).

Dinnia Diaz Artavia, development assistant and director of female programs for the Costa Rican Soccer Federation, is from Samara and noted the need for this type of program in rural communities where children have less opportunity for professional athletic training.

To fill this need, they are also organizing a 3-day course to train 30 adults to coach soccer, which will take place from Thursday to Saturday prior to the festival. The men and women selected to participate in this course include teachers as well as parents who have shown an interest in the sport, from surrounding communities like El Torito, Santo Domingo, Carrillo, Santa Marta and Estrada as well as Samara and Nicoya.

After the course, they will be able to form youth teams that can then compete in regional tournaments, Diaz explained.
