On February 7th municipal elections were held throughout the entire country to elect mayors, syndics (district representatives) and municipal council members.

Do you know what council members do? They are the representatives of the inhabitants of the canton and their responsibilities include attending municipal council sessions, voting in favor of or against municipal agreements, participating in municipal commissions, speaking, making motions and proposals, requesting revisions to municipal agreements, appealing resolutions by the municipal council president and requesting special council sessions where specific topics are analyzed.

In Guanacaste, there are about 61 council members, 40 of whom are men and 21 women.

The National Liberation Party gained the most council members in the last elections with 24 representatives, while only one representative won for the Libertarian Movement Party and the Christian Social Republican Party.

The municipalities that have the most council members are Liberia, Nicoya and Santa Cruz, with seven each. This corresponds to less than 2% of the country’s total population. The rest of the mayoral offices have 5 council members, corresponding to less than 1% of the country’s total population.
