Students of the National University (UNA) in Nicoya have decided to be part of the solution in defense of the environment, conducting recycling, cleaning and electronics collection campaigns and even giving talks to other students.

The effort is headed by UNA’s Ecological Blue Flag Committee, composed of Evans Jimenez, Adriana Vasquez Duarte, Aaron Jimenez and Karina Campos, who are guided by Professor Aleida Rosales Acosta.

Last April, they were awarded the Blue Flag in recognition of their labor in favor of the environment. “Being in charge of environmental education, we are responsible for giving lectures on environmental awareness to students, and we conduct campaigns for recycling, cleaning and collecting discarded electronics and technology and everything that can be recycled,” explained Adriana Vasquez.

For his part, Aaron Jimenez told us that his mission is to look out for proper use of water at the university, so it is not wasted and is in good condition. “I coordinate revision of pipes with the head of maintenance so that water is not wasted,” he indicated. “We are coordinating with AyA to see the degree of purification that water in the canton of Nicoya has.”

During the month of September, the students conducted a campaign to collect appliances and technology on the campus, thus supporting the fight against dengue. “We notified the community to bring all materials such as old refrigerators, computers, coffee makers, televisions, etc., and people responded well to the announcement,” explained Karina Campos.

In addition, they have the support of the Municipality of Nicoya, AyA, and volunteer groups from some communities like Corral de Piedra and Coyote.
