Following the events surrounding the resignation of Ronal Vargas as a legislator for the Broad Front (Frente Amplio) party, during which his congressional colleagues lamented his exit as caused by health problems, various social and political sectors expressed their anger when it became officially known that there were other causes.
Vargas told legislators that he was resigning to attend to health problems that had been affecting him. However, that story was refuted by the Broad Front faction after 9 p.m. on the same day in a press conference during which it was reported that the ex-priest had requested resignation because of a sexual harassment complaint that had been presented against him by a legislative official.
Hearing the new version, criticism from some legislators has been strong, as according to them they felt cheated by Vargas’s attitude. President Luis Guillermo Solis posted on his Twitter account, “I feel cheated by the revelations regarding Ronal Vargas’s resignation from his seat. He deceived the country.”
Solis added that it is imperative that the Broad Front explain the situation:
“I confirm that sentiment and await, like the rest of the citizenry, the full, precise and transparent explanation that the Broad Front party has offered to give and that is obligatory, taking into account the complexity of this case,” Solis indicated in a press release.
For his part, Ronal Vargas wrote on his Facebook account, among other things:
“There is no contradiction between the supposedly different statements I made before the legislature. I haven’t deceived anyone and [find] the statements made about me in this case by people who I value odd. I resigned from being a deputy because my health has seriously deteriorated, with permanent problems of insomnia, stress and a strong stomach problem that have impeded my work in the government.”
Despite the many criticisms launched against the ex-legislator, there are also many who have offered their support and words of encouragement, above all on social networks.
