The Tempisque Conservation Area (Spanish acronym: ACT) will conduct a new land registry study in the Ostional National Wildlife Refuge (Spanish acronym: RNVSO). Land registry studies are tools for analyzing buildings within the refuge, determining how old they are and evaluating the legality of their properties.
According to ACT’s deputy director, Mauricio Méndez, this study will make it possible to identify changes in land use within the refuge over time. “It allows us to understand the social dimension of what’s happening there. It allows us to have a history of how occupancy has behaved and will also allow many people to have support that they’ve been there for a long time,” Méndez explained.
This is the third time that SINAC has conducted a land registry study of the refuge; the first survey was between 2007 and 2009, and the second in 2016.
The information, according to the official, will allow them to work on a new law to convert the RNVSO into a mixed-use area again, a category that it lost after a ruling by the Constitutional Court revoked that status to make it only state-owned.
“The first question that they ask us when we go to the Legislative Assembly is how many people live there, because they want to see the social dimension,” Méndez said,
Méndez explained that if any person finds it impossible to go to update their land information on the scheduled dates and places, they can contact the Nicoya regional office and present their evidence there. The contacts are: 2686-4967 or email [email protected].
According to Méndez, once the data collection is concluded, they will visit the families to verify the information. However, he did not specify the dates.
