Sunset Shack Offers a Boutique Hostel

Just before the main entrance to Guiones Beach is Nosara’s newest hostel, The Sunset Shack. When Harmony Hotel owners John and Susan Johnson bought the former Hotel Casa Tucan for their expansion plans, they decided to open the facility as a hostel to “give it life for a bit” according to General Manager Veronica Monge.

“This hostel is for surfers and others adventuring around.  It’s meant to be for walk-ins,” she said. Many of the guests don’t have a car so having yoga classes and the beach close by is convenient.

“It’s all about location,” she said. “We might be a bit more expensive than the other hostels but most of them are far from the beach.”

The Sunset Shack Hostel has eight rooms, four of which are private and can accommodate three guests.  The other four rooms each contain six bunk beds.  The rate for shared accommodations is $35 per night and $136 for the private rooms.  All rooms have air conditioning and WiFi.

There is a restaurant onsite, and a slackline for balancing, ping pong tables and hammocks are being added.

Monge said that the Harmony Hotel expansion construction is scheduled to begin in September and the hostel will close at that time. Profits from the temporary Sunset Shack will be donated to the community, she said.

“But the Harmony owners and managers want to have a Sunset Shack continue in the future.  They like the vibe,” Monge assured.

The Sunset Shack Hostel is located across from the Harmony Hotel.  It can be found online at www.thesunsetshack.com and can be reached by phone at 2682-0527.
