The Dance of the Mare

Every December 12 we celebrate the Virgin of Guadalupe, patron of Nicoya, with the dance of the mare as the day’s main cultural manifestation.

The dance mixes Spanish and indigenous culture and alludes to an oral legend that has been around since the days of colonization.

There are three protagonists in the celebration: the dancer, who is the one who moves the mare, a drummer and a flutist.
