Get your sports attire ready – the Committee for Youths of Nicoya, the National University (UNA – Universidad Nacional), and the Municipality of Nicoya want to celebrate National Sports, Recreation and Health Day with everyone.

And if that isn’t enough, Banco de Costa Rica (BCR) is also organizing the sixth annual BCR bike race, dedicated to Nicoyan families. The event starts at 8 a.m. in Nicoya’s park.

Both events will take place on Sunday, June 8, with activities for the whole family.

Walk and Race for Sports Day. The events will begin at 7 a.m. in Nicoya’s colonial plaza, with a 5 km walk through the city’s surroundings. Runners will start at 7:30 a.m., also leaving from the colonial plaza and heading towards the community of Sabana Grande de Nicoya. The race will finish back in Nicoya’s plaza.

At that same time, a variety activities and games for kids will start, directed by the National University of Heredia.

Since adults cannot be left out, at 9 a.m. there will be traditional dancing, with groups organized by the UNA and the Nicoya Campus, at the pavilion in Recaredo Briceño Park.

Youths will have their chance to participate beginning at 10:30 a.m. with a presentation by the group “Asi es Nicoya,” from UNA’s Chorotega branch.

To wrap up the events with the highlight of the day, there will be a much-anticipated concert with the internationally-renowned singer Humberto Vargas at 1 p.m.

Those who wish to participate in the race and walk should register the day of the event and arrive at the colonial plaza at 6:30 a.m. to receive instructions and a t-shirt. The registration fee for the race is ₡2,000 ($4); for the walk it is ₡1,000 ($2).

BCR Cycling. According to Bryan Cortes, coordinator of the event, the bike race will be organized into two categories: one 20 km course will go through Caimital and return to the park in Nicoya, and a longer 46 km race that will go to Matambu before turning back to Nicoya.

The top finishers will receive prizes and there will also be raffles of a bike and bike parts, courtesy of Gollo and Banco de Costa Rica. The participants will receive hydration during the race and lunch after finishing.

For the enjoyment of children during the race, a group of face painters from the Nicoya Public Force and a group of bikers (riding small bicycles) will be in the colonial plaza during the race.

Those interested in participating in the race will pay a registration fee of ₡7,000 ($14). Call 2658-5010 or 8319-7526 for more information.

Funds raised through the events will be allocated for Nicoya’s Senior Care Home, so participants will be able to enjoy the day while collaborating with a good cause.
