Nicoya has belonged to Costa Rica for 190 years, and perhaps our readers have never taken time to get to know the canton. If so, July 24 could be your chance to learn the Colonial City’s history.
The opportunity involves Vamos a turistear (“Let’s See the Sights”), which is a nighttime tour that includes visits to some of the most important sites in the area. It will be led by guides who will explain the history and details at each stop.
According to the event’s organizer, Cesar Rodriguez Barrantes, the tour promotes the splendor of urban sites that have aesthetic beauty and historical importance.
“For this event, the only goal is to foster historical awareness about the event of the Annexation of the District of Nicoya to Costa Rica and grow Nicoyans’ pride in their history and architectural heritage,” explained Barrantes.
During the tour, participants will visit sites such as the town hall, the brotherhood building, the colonial church and a few houses of the La Cananga neighborhood, led by the architect Mauricio Quiros and Aidelina Flores, a Nicoyan who has lived her entire life in the city and knows the histories of each house well. In addition, the organizer will be leading the tour.
Vamos a turistear is sponsored by the Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT – Instituto Costarricense de Turismo) and will be supported by Public Force officials to ensure security. Also, an ambulance will be available in case of emergency.
The tour is completely free. Those who would like to participate simply have to arrive at the Municipality of Nicoya at 7 p.m. Vamos a turistear is a unique tour that lasts approximately an hour and a half. A show with dancing puppets is planned to be held at the last stop, close to Living Nicoya.
English speakers are welcome as well, as Barrantes speaks fluent English and can help with translating.
