The historic achievement of Costa Rica’s national soccer team (the “Sele”) continues to awe the country and the world. In the case of Nicoya, joy and admiration for the team continue to flow through the streets. The feelings even reached the members of the Municipal Council, who unanimously decided to declare the players of the Sele favorite sons of the canton as a gesture of gratitude.

The motion was presented by Councilor Rodolfo Orozco of the National Liberation Party (PLN – Partido Liberacion Nacional) during the council’s ordinary session on Monday, June 30. Orozco said that the team’s efforts have lifted the country and that they are playing some of the best soccer in the world.

“Yesterday [Sunday June 29] we saw Nicoya come to a standstill with Costa Rica’s victory and I think it is important that Nicoyans have a chance to see a majority of the players and applaud them,” said Orozco. In addition, he mentioned that the Costa Rican Soccer Federation (Federacion Costarricense de Futbol) would approve the team’s participation in the Annexation festival.

“I called the Costa Rican Soccer Federation today [Monday June 30] and they told me that they would be completely in agreement with all or some of the players coming to celebrate the annexation with us,” reported Orozco.

“There is a Guanacasteco player, the Liberian Cristian Gamboa, and we want him to be with us on July 25,” affirmed the councilor, who added, “I was told by members of the Federation that once the World Cup is over, there are players who will come to Guanacaste’s beaches to rest, so we will take advantage of that to bring them here.”

In addition, the councilors will decide in the next few days whether the government council session will take place in Coopealianza’s hall. The commemoration of the 190th anniversary of the Annexation of the District of Nicoya will take place in the plaza in Recaredo Briceño Park.

The formal session of the Government Council will be held at 12 p.m. by request of the Presidential House.

On a different subject, Adriana Rodriguez, the vice mayor, reported that as of Monday, June 30, free internet access is available in Recaredo Briceño Park through a wifi network managed by the mayor’s office.
