Local Artist is Possessed by Waves

by Fritz Elmendorf

Kathryn Colvig is a woman possessed. With a passion for waves that comes from taking up surfing two years ago at Playa Guiones and a passion for color that she expresses through her oil paintings, she brings dedication and a piercing vision to her new series of wave paintings that are on display at the Zen Café through Feb. 19.

Mixing the still-fresh excitement of learning to surf with her deep experience as an oil painter, Colvig has produced exciting local canvases and has now added sunsets to her current specialty of wave painting. Her skills at capturing the colors of sunlight refracted through waves extend, or are perhaps surpassed, with her sunsets, which deserve a larger canvas.

She has also added a small series of beach landscapes from South Guiones. But her large canvasses celebrate the wave, from the surfer’s perspective, and she has a beautiful ability to capture the sensation of catching the wave in all its Technicolor glory. “I go home after surfing and paint what I think I saw. What was the color of the water? How do you paint depth?” she asks rhetorically. She has figured it out.

Colvig constantly visualizes waves, and is inspired by photographs of waves as well. On display is a brilliant depiction of a breaking wave off Western Australia called Shipsterns. A painting called ‘The Future’ shows the inside of a tube, a perspective she admits was inspired by photographs rather than her own first hand sight. “I’ve always wanted to know what it looks like inside the barrel. I see that that will be my future,” she said.

In addition to the Zen Café, where new owner Joanne hosted a posh reception for the opening, Colvig’s canvases are on display at the Surfing Nosara real estate office, Coconut Harry’s surf shop, and the Nova development office.

She has been a professional painter for 28 years and her oil canvases of urban street scenes have been represented in galleries in New York, Chicago and San Francisco.

Children’s Effort Became a Dance

The boys run all around with red scarves in their hands. The girls line up for makeup while their mothers make last-minute adjustments to their typical dresses. Excitement and anxiety are the air. It’s not a presentation of the national ballet, but it seems as if it were for the 35 children of Nosara’s Serapio López Fajardo School. More >
