During the last week of November and the first week of December, Nosara Sostenible organized a soccer tournament held at Nosara's soccer field in order to raise funds for the local Red Cross Committee as well as to promote the sport in children.
Organizers estimate that approximately 100 people attended the event each day and 11 teams participated, including both children and adults.
With just the team's registration fees, $1000 were raised for the Red Cross, without adding the additional funds generated by the Committee from selling food and beverages.
“Our goal is to repeat this event in every neighborhood, improving the activities each time", explained Marco Johanning, the Tournament's coordinator, who added that “another objective was to implement an efficient tournament model (made up by short games), which allowed us to hold many simultaneous games per day".
For many kids, this was their first time in a soccer tournament and their excitement was noticeable. The children gave their very best on the field, supporting their top scorers so that their team could also win this prize. |

“On a personal level”, reflects Johanning, “I was very moved to see children playing barefoot, without any complexes or inhibitions and with all their will. Many of them were on the winning team. The lesson that this experience has given me is a lesson for life: by persevering and going after any goal in life, it is always possible to overcome any limitations or obstacles. This has also created a new need that we must address in upcoming tournaments: soccer cleats".
