Fishing Tournament in Benefit of
Garza’s Elementary School

The Education Board (Junta de Educación) and the Patronato Escolar of Garza’s Elementary School organized the second “Coastal Fishing” Tournament as a fundraising activity for the school. The tournament took place on Playa Garza on January 14th, 15th and 16th.

“Anyone could participate”, explained Gabriel Coronado Guardia, member of the Organizing Committee. Precisely because fishing was supposed to be done using only a fishing rod or reel, the activity managed to assemble 23 teams of all ages: children, teenagers and adults, who shared the experience, competing under equal conditions.

During the activity the teams had to catch the best fish in order to score points. The score was kept according to quantity, quality and size and, everything that was caught, was cooked at “Barco del Amor”, a bar that opens its doors for this annual event only.

As an addition to this year’s regulations, which were mandatory for all teams, all fish caught that weighed less than half a kilogram or that is considered to be an endangered species had to be returned to the ocean.

The two teams led by Fred López Hernández and Napoleón Busto tied in first place, each winning 112,000 colones. The second place was taken by the team led by Aaron Duarte Bra, winning 50,000 colones.

Over 20 of the area’s businesses contributed to the activity through donations. Nearly 700,000 colones were raised in total.
