The Closing Night of Nicoya Town Fair
Nicoya closed this year’s fair with Corrida de Toros

By Pinar Istek

NICOYA – Weeklong Nicoya fair ended with Corrida de Toros (Bull Run) on Monday night, February 7th, with the attendance of hundreds of Nicoyans.

While 20 bulls were ready for the run, there were four horse riders to challenge and trap them. Approximately 50 to 60 runners were present at the bullring. As the bulls rubbed their feet, creating small dust clouds behind, they also made the runners sweat chasing them throughout the night.

Julio Cesar Arrieta Sequeíra, 30, one of the horse riders of the night who has been doing this for 18 years commented that “Thank God! The night has been going well”.

As the bulls approached to the runners or the fence, where some of the audience chose to sit, more applauses and screams ascended. The music, played by cimarrona was also cheering up the crowd, which filled the tribunes. Additionally, there was a group audience behind the fences, enjoying the excitement of the run with their families.

As opposed to smooth flow of the night, there were some inevitable incidents of injuries among runners inside the bullring.

In addition to the run, the fair had sales of wood chairs, clothing and jewelry as well as a variety of food for Nicoyans. While the music, rising from the discotheques, was adding to the liveliness, lights from the sales stands, restaurants and dance floors were coloring the fair.
