Enter VON's Writing Contest
Famous Writer Clive Matson is the Contest Judge

By Arianna McKinney

"We all have very interesting stories," affirmed author and poet Clive Matson, who will be visiting Nosara to conduct a writing seminar, and The Voice of Nosara would like to hear your stories. We invite you to submit an entry in our first writing contest, and Matson will select the winner, whose story will be published by VON.* The winner will enjoy an evening of luxury with a free one-night stay at L'acqua Viva hotel.

Stories can be submitted in English or Spanish, up to 10,000 words, by Wednesday, February 22nd by emailing them to [email protected] or dropping a printed copy off at our office in Guiones. The winner will be announced in the April edition of VON.

Two portions of the week-long workshop held February 16th to the 25th by Matson will be free, and everyone is welcome to participate. An open writing workshop will be held Saturday, February 18th at 6:30 p.m. at Nosara B&B Retreat in Playa Pelada, and a public reading of writers from the group will take place at the David Kitson Library in Nosara on Thursday, February 23rd at 6:30 p.m.

During the workshop, Matson says that appreciation is key, helping people build confidence that what they write is interesting to others. "We appreciate each other's writing," he affirms. "Usually there's something valuable in the writing; it's hearing that in the writing and reflecting that back to the writer."

One tip Matson offers for writing is to "zoom into one scene, one event and slow it way down. Write the small physical details."

Matson explained that "there's an automatic connection between words and images in your mind." Thus if someone says "you can imagine a three-legged dog running," the human brain automatically conjures up that image. Those images, in turn, bring both the writer and the reader into the writing, allowing them to feel and see what's happening.

Matson, who lives in Oakland, California, has authored several books and collections of poetry, including "Let the Crazy Child Write!" a guide to unleashing the creative unconscious while writing. He began teaching creative writing in 1978, earned an MFA (master's degree in fine arts) in poetry from Colombia University and has taught more than 3,000 writing seminars.

*If the winning entry is long, a portion may be published in the print edition and the entire story will be published online at voiceofnosara.com.
