Rumor Has It That the Play to Raise Funds for the Library Was a Hit

By Arianna McKinney

Chaos reigned on stage and the audience cackled and roared with laughter as 10 actors collectively known as the Nosara Players interpreted Rumors, a comic play by Neil Simon, at the Selva Mar Club on Sunday, February 19th.

Although a couple of the actors occasionally forgot a line, another member of the cast quickly prompted them and the show would go on. With comical facial expressions and emphatic body language, the troupe fully engaged the audience in a web of rumors, suspicions, fast talking and comical cover-ups, proving that community theater is alive and well in Nosara.

And more importantly, the success of the play means that the Nosara community will benefit from another year of services and programs at the David Kitson Library. Beverly Kitson, Director of the library, reported that the show was oversold. While the goal was to sell 100 tickets at $75 each, they ended up selling 115!

"It's very good this year, and I was worried because of the economy," Kitson said. The funds raised will cover not quite a third of the library's annual operating expenses, including maintenance and staff. Other sources of funding are major donors and an annual party for patrons of the library.

Librarian Consuelo Juarez explained what a benefit the privately-funded library is for Nosara, noting that there are 58 public libraries in Costa Rica, but her colleagues at other state-funded libraries are limited since any activities require permission and budget approval, and most libraries don't have sufficient funds to actually buy new books.

On the other hand, the David Kitson Library receives many donations of materials and support from volunteers, allowing them to work more with the community and offer programs such as reading clubs and activities for senior citizens.

Thanks to the Nosara Players, all in attendance enjoyed a delightful evening, and Nosarans can enjoy another year of reading good books and benefiting from other enrichment programs at the David Kitson Library.
