Music and Art Mingle in Samara's New Art Studio

By Arianna McKinney

The premise of El Jardin de los Artistas (The Artists' Garden) is simple: a place where artists can meet other artists in an environment of respect that fosters creativity and culture.

"In this garden, there are no limits. I don't want limits," affirmed painter and internationally recognized furniture designer Nad Thiry, co-creator of the garden along with musician Oldimar Juarez Zuñiga, known as "el maestro" (the master) or "piano man."

Jardin de los Artistas, located in Samara next to Casa Coba across from the gym, is open Monday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., with artistic events every Thursday evening. In the garden, which is slowly taking shape, they plan to offer music classes, art practice sessions, poetry readings, book signings and exhibitions of paintings, sculptures and photography. They are also preparing to install a stage and curtain for theatrical performances.

Oldimar, from El Curime de Nicoya, plays piano, guitar, percussion and marimba. Oldimar, together with Nicoyan folkloric guitarist, singer and composer Gerardo Zuñiga and saxophone and flute player Pablo Leal from San Jose, plan on recording original music in the garden soon. "We want to discover and know that there is a lot of talent here," Oldimar expressed with enthusiasm. "We'll have different artists, not only the same, something different, so they become accustomed to coming."

Nad, originally from France, where she studied art in Dijon, is a citizen of the world who has lived in places like Africa, Morocco, Uruguay and now Samara, Costa Rica. She and Oldimar met by means of music, when Oldimar was playing at a restaurant. "Artists look for other artists," Nad related. They formed a friendship and together they have invented the garden in a backyard where not one plant existed before, transforming it into a center of creativity for the community and visitors.
