McPherson, 3 Guitars Featured in April 4 Concert

by Fritz Elmendorf

Guitarist Bill McPherson, who anchored the local music scene with the Medicine Show Band and his solo performances beginning in 2005, is returning April 4 with two other talents for an acoustic concert titled appropriately “3 Guitars.”

While McPherson needs no introduction, he is joined by Edgar Sequeira, who some acclaim as the best Costa Rican jazz guitarist, and Jaco-based Chris Scott, who is originally from Los Angeles, like McPherson.
The set list for the show at the Costa Rica Yoga Spa will include original compositions by McPherson, as well as jazz pieces and classic rock songs that will allow plenty of opportunity for the trio to demonstrate their improvisational skills.

McPherson, who is a Berklee College of Music graduate, is a master of many styles but is most at home with jazz and blues with Latin and African rhythms, as demonstrated in the 12 CDs he has released. He will be playing for the first time together with Sequeira, a popular figure on the circuit in San Jose who received classical training in the U.S., and the interplay between these accomplished improvisers should make for a great evening.

With the third dimension of Scott, noted for his technical expertise, the acoustic program will be intimate and listener-oriented, McPherson promised.

McPherson has been missed in Nosara for a year and a half since relocating first to San Jose, with his wife Janet Montiel and their daughter Shelby, and then back to his home turf of Southern California. While excited about his family’s nine day visit to Nosara, he told VON that all are well in Ventura, close to Los Angeles, where he is now professor of music at College of the Canyons, in Valencia.

He plays regularly with his Grammy-nominated recording group Native Vibe and Janet works as a full time massage therapist. “The transition to living in the U.S. has gone really well. We feel blessed, but really miss Costa Rica,” he said.

Artistic posters for the event were designed by Richard Moffett, another McPherson fan and ex-Nosarean, who now lives in Atlanta. Cost is c5,000 and reservations for the 7 pm show can be made by calling 2682-0192.
