La Banana Bar Shuts Its Doors

By Adam Dietrich

This Saturday April 21, La Banana Bar will be closing and will mark the end of a dance era for Nosara.

Paul DaCosta, ‘DJ Paul,’ who is a regular feature at the club and has lived below it for the last few years, will be providing the music for the final night.

Marine Juad, who runs the place with her sister says they plan to stay in Nosara but that it was time to, “move in a new direction.” She says they loved running La Banana and have been honored to be able to bring so many Costa Rican bands to Nosara.

In its relatively short life span of four and a half years, La Banana has played host to many of Costa Rica’s best music acts including, Cocafunka. Ojo De Buey, Niño Koi. Las Robertas, Santos Y Zurdo. Bufonic, Zopilote and Kingo Lovers to name a few. They’ve also had international acts perform like Perro Bravo, which features ex-sublime guitarist and producer Michael Happoldt.

La Banana developed a reputation in San Jose as a unique venue and a reggae hot spot and they have received recognition in Del Sol magazine for it.  Twice La Banana was voted best reggae venue, once best place to find love and once best service.

Banana Bar was always the chosen place to spend Thursday night

La Banana

Arguably La Banana’s most consistently popular night has been Thursday night reggae. With the closing, this will leave a gap in the highly scheduled world of Nosara nightlife. DJ DaCosta hopes to close that, he think’s Olga’s bar in Pelada may be a solution.

“I want to be able to continue my activities as a DJ and have been looking at Olga's as a likely venue for all kinds of musical and artistic ventures. But I am open to ideas of all kinds as I would like to vary my experience here and carry on the progressive tradition of La Banana,” DaCosta said.

Whatever the future may hold, one thing is certain, the chapter of La Banana in Nosara is closing. However, the Juad family can walk away know that they left an indelible mark on Nosara and have set the bar high. Building a club whose reputation extended all the way to San Jose, and establishing a nightlife tradition in this town, they will be a hard act to follow.

DaCosta remains positive, “La Banana was a phenomenon, energetically & enthusiastically run by two brave and hard-working young women and their family,” he says. “It is definitely the end of an era in one way and the beginning of something new for all of us.”
