If you like to run and want to help the community of Nosara, on May 19th you can achieve both at the same time. Sustainable Nosara is organizing Aventura Nosara, a race whose profits will go to the Nosara firefighters, the Security Association and the Recycling and Waste Association.
Registration costs 10,000 colones ($20) per entrant. The money from registration will be divided equally between these three organizations to fund community projects, according to organizer Marco Johanning. |

The 12.3-kilometer race, which starts at 7 a.m., will begin and end on the main street of Guiones, running alongside the mangroves of Cerro Lagarta Biological Reserve and the Ostional Wildlife Refuge. A shorter circuit of 5.3 kilometers is also available. Participants will compete in three categories: men, women and junior.
The contest is open to anyone, Johanning noted. Included in the registration fee is a jersey, a participation medal and discounts at some local businesses, including hotel discounts for people coming from other areas such as San Jose to take part in the race.
"It's a race through nature trails, the forest and beach, and is unique, and the idea is not only to raise funds for the community but to remind people of how special Nosara is and that we need to take care of it," Johanning commented.
This is why, although the fundraiser was originally planned for the Recycling and Waste Management Association, the organizers decided to approach the firefighters and the Security Association also, seeing that they too would benefit from community support. Nosara's firefighters are in need of new equipment in particular after several of their hoses were damaged while fighting a fire at the garbage dump.
