Good Ceviche at Samara's Gas Station

05/17/13

Alcira Mendezo Ruiz, of Nicoya, has been driving back and forth between Nicoya and Samara for five years to run her business, Ceviches Machos, out of her car at the Samara gas station every day between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Mendezo Ruiz offers shrimp, fish and mixed ceviche as well as a typical plate called vigoron, which includes repollo, chicharron, chimichurri and yucca. A small cup of ceviche will cost you 1000 colones ($2) and a large one is 2000 colones ($4). A vigoron plate is 1000 colones ($2) as well.

All the food is prepared by Mendezo Ruiz herself with seafood that she buys from Costa de Pajaros along the Gulf of Nicoya. And for refreshment, she offers the natural delight of the tropics, coconut water.
