In the spirit of fun and friendly competition, CREAR is organizing the second edition of CREAR Combate to be held on Samara Beach on June 1. Blind surfing, leap-frog and human wheelbarrow are part of the new challenges the participants must compete in.
Like last year, participating teams of four people each will head into combat bicycling, running, swimming and surfing. This year, however, after the surf, the team must lead the surfer blindfolded to the next checkpoint. From there, the team will head to the next checkpoint doing leap frog, where they will form a human wheelbarrow and head back to C&C, for the final task of making a mer-person in the sand.
“It is an athletic event, but mostly for fun and teamwork,” expressed Johannah Waite, development director of CREAR.
For youngsters, there is also a kids’ corner with games and activities such as bracelet making and face painting. There will also be a Mini Combate that will consist of jumping through hoops, racing with an egg, forming a human wheelbarrow and other fun beach activities. This is free for all children, with prizes at the end.
“The event last year was a major success as we had a great turnout of six teams and a ton of children for the kids corner and Mini Combate. Many people told us how happy they were that the event was so family friendly,” said Waite. “We hope to have another successful event this year, with even more participation.”
Last year, the event raised about $600, which helped fund the purchase of supplies and transportation for the annual summer camp held in July for the El Torito and Samara elementary schools. This year, the funds raised will likewise help fund the summer camp, as well as other CREAR educational programs .
CREAR Combate starts at C&C Surf School at noon this year instead of in the morning, with the hope that this will encourage more participation. The entrance fee is 12,000 colones ($24) per team for competitors ages 13 and up. Participants receive a free t-shirt and a drink. Food, drinks and beer will be on sale during the event, and music will liven up the event as well.
