Local surfer Christian Santamaria leads a line up of students from Del Mar as they head towards an area near the cemetery on Guiones beach to plant trees.  Over the course of three days from May 27-29, over 70 people came out to plant 310 trees. To read full article go here

Jonathan Madriz Berrios, professor of violin and viola at the new Nicoya music school, instructs Laura Gomez Diaz, 18 from Hojancha during a viola class on May 28. In addition to the two practice rooms, storage room and massive performance space, the building also has a shaded patio in the back for lessons. It will house the Nicoya music school which has 300 students. To read full article go here

A dead howler monkey hangs from a power line in front of Hotel Casa Tucan on May 22. The monkey's tail touched an exposed wire near the transformer, the shock and surge killed the monkey and cut power to all the businesses and houses along the street for about an hour. Howlers are endangered, largely due to habitat destruction, in Guanacaste power lines are a major threat to the monkeys who use them to cross road. To read related article go here

Runners take off during the first jungle held in Nosara, on May 19. Runners ran either a 12km or 5km race, the entrance fee was donated to the Nosara security, recycling and firefighting associations. There were 91 runners in total, most of whom were from other parts of Costa Rica, however, it was a local who won, Hector Zuniga Noguera from Garza, took first place in the 12km race. During the first ever Nosara motocross race on May 13, part of a six race series called Guanacaste Motocross, a rider named Wicho falls off his bike after bumping with another in mid-air. There were no injuries and he got back on the bike and finished the race. To read full article go here

Members of Nosara Red Cross take part in a joint certification in vertical rescue with the Nosara Firefighters on May 13. The practical part was held on the bridge over the Rio Moñtana. The certification and training allows them to rescue people trapped below, for example, a cliff-face, a deep gully or a ravine. The two organizations have said they want to continue joint training in other types of certification. To read full article go here

From May 2 - 4 dental students from the University of Costa Rica were at Harmony Hotel to perform volunteer dental check-ups on local students. Normally a dentist from Nicoya vists once a month but that dentist can't tend to everyone, so there is great need for dental care in Nosara. As well, the students at UCR need to complete a practical component to get their degree, this helps them achieve that. To read full article go here

On Friday, June 22, representatives of the Ministry of Health shut down the tables where local artisans have been selling their wares. This is the second time the artisans have been shut down and left wondering where to go or what to do to continue working and supporting their families.

Members of different social and community organizations from Nosara will march to Nicoya July 25th to request that the government incorporate pavement over route 160 in the budget. 

Commission Reports that 90% of Proposed Regulatory Plan is a Cut and Paste Job

On Wednesday, June 6, the Administrative Commission of nine community representatives presented an extensive report to the Municpal Council of the Canton of Nicoya, recommending that the council completely reject the proposed regulatory plan elaborated by the Spanish company Inypsa.

Nicoya Mayor Will Protest Against the Government on July 25 Celebrations

Marco Antonio Jimenez Muñoz, mayor of Nicoya, Guanacaste, announced that he will protest against Laura Chinchilla Miranda’s government, on the Day of Annexation because of the "deplorable state of national roads in this area.”

The Order to Close Pedregal is for Land that Was Not Being Exploited

Several Nicoyans are asking themselves how is it that the company of Pedregal can continue to work on the site of La Calera, at the entrance to the city of Nicoya. The reason is that the Environmental Administrative Tribunal, which ordered a temporary cessation of Pedregal in Nicoya, made this resolution due to a second site where the company was working in 2009.

Nicoyan Auditor Owes Municipality 15 Years of Taxes
• Municipal Council Approved Sending Case to the Controller
• Official Was Suspended for Three Months

At the same time that ministers of the Republic have been under investigation for evading taxes, the internal auditor of the Municipality of Nicoya, Gilberto Lizano Elizondo, has also been under investigation for evading real estate taxes since 1997, as detailed in a report by the directive organ that investigated the case.
