Thieves Assault Samara Gas Station

By Arianna McKinney

With a romantic touch, a man wearing a motorcycle helmet approached Karol Matamoros Briones with a bunch of flowers as she was working at Servicentro Samara, preparing money for a bank deposit.  Then he pulled out a gun.

“He called me by my name and told me to help him put the money in the bag,” she related.  He never removed the helmet and she didn’t recognize his voice. She estimated that the amount of money stolen was between 6 and 8 million colones ($12,000 to $16,000) since it included all of the cash transacted during the weekend.

The robbery took place at about 7:30 a.m. on Monday, July 16th. Two men arrived at the gas station on motorcycle, a black AX100 Yamaha without a license plate, according to Kendy Matarrita Guerrero, a manager at the gas station. One waited outside while the other robbed the gas station.

Later the two escaped on motorcycle toward Samara, throwing their two helmets off along the roadside.

The motorcycle was found abandoned near Buena Vista River and was recovered by OIJ, according to Florencio Medina Caravaca, an official of the guard with the Public Force in Nicoya. The police also detained a car in Nicoya suspected of being an accomplice to the robbery since it had been suspiciously parked at the entrance of Buena Vista and the two on motorcycle were seen approaching the car.

However, Medina reported that when the police searched the vehicle they found no evidence related to the theft. Nonetheless, the driver was detained at the district attorney’s office. So far, the police have not been able to locate the two who escaped on motorcycle or recover the money.
