First 2012 Arribada At Ostional

By Giordano Ciampini

Tourists and locals were privy to an early treat of sea turtle nesting at Ostional Beach on August 11, 2012.

The arrival marks the first Arribada, or large nesting assembly, of the season. Turtles numbering in the thousands made their way through choppy waters, navigating waves, rocks and driftwood. Their heads poked piecemeal out of the water, gasping for air as they made, slowly and surely for shore, creating wells for their eggs, about a foot into the sand.

Most of these will scorch from heat, be eaten by vultures and dogs, or simply not hatch. The few who end up making their way out of the shell and back into the open ocean will begin a new, and incredibly perilous journey.

However, the ones that survive the wide blue expanse will always remember their homes, and a new generation will come back to Ostional, to lay the next generation of sea turtles.
