Matapalo de Samara: Robbery Suspect Captured

By Arianna McKinney

For a TV and a fan, a young man is now facing the justice system. Garcia Obando, Nicaraguan, was arrested by the police at around 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 3rd and taken to Nicoya to the public attorney’s office.

Jose Angel Gomez Matarrita, chief of the Samara Public Force, related that he spent all day on Thursday, October 4th, in Nicoya at the court and with OIJ presenting the evidence, which include an eye-witness report and the recovered stolen items.

The robbery was reported to have occurred around 7 p.m. from the residence of Laura Arias Bonilla in Matapalo of Samara.

The robbery was reported to the police delegation, but the police didn’t have a vehicle. The police chief explained that the patrol car broke down on September 24th. It requires a new clutch disc, which would cost 90,000 colones ($180) plus 70,000 colones ($140) in labor. Without official transportation, the police chief used his own personal vehicle to go to Matapalo.

One neighbor reported that he saw the suspect pass by with the fan. They found the stolen items in the suspect’s home.

Gomez said that he feels good about the police work in this case since they were able to capture the person with evidence. Although he hopes the suspect will receive a prison term, even if the suspect is released Gomez affirmed that this helps to identify individuals at the very least. “We do what we can,” he commented.

The police also identified a Colombian man with last name Angulo, as having purchased the stolen items.
