Samara Surf Tournament
Live DJ and Good Surf, All Together in One Place
By Arianna McKinney

On Saturday, December 4th, local businesses sponsored a surf tournament at Samara Beach. Spectators enjoyed food, drinks and a live DJ while watching surfers compete in three divisions: Open, Juniors and Long Board.

About $300 in prize money was awarded. The top prize of $100 went to Chico Cantrell for first place Open. Second place went to Alejandro Lopez Hernandez and third to Adolfo Gomez. In Juniors, the winners were Alex Mendoza Hernandez, Dorian Quesada Torres and Andrey Lopez. Top surfers on Long Board were Adolfo Gomez, Alex Gomez and Kenneth “Pato” Suarez Rodriguez.

“The tournament is good for the community,” commented Suarez Rodriguez of Pato Surf School, one of the event’s sponsors. “All of the young ones are there, joking around, eating and having fun.”

“I think it was an excellent turnout. I was pleasantly surprised,” said Janet Park-Brogan, owner of Zona de Confort, who organized the event. “There’s some pretty amazing surfers here.”

Other sponsors were Choco’s Beach Shop, Surf School Samara, Jaco’s Surfboard Repair and Tabanuco’s.

Basic rules and etiquette of the lineup

It’s a busy time here in Nosara and there will be a lot of people out in the lineup. We urge you to be respectful to everyone in the water, beginners, locals, tourists etc. Surfing can be dangerous and local Doctor, Dr. Maurico Jimenez, says that the number of surf related injuries really starts to increase in December due to the crowded lineups. So, in order to avoid collisions with other surfers, cuts, bruises or possibly worse, please follow these few simple, but extremely important rules of etiquette: More >
