Christian getting a nice tube on a beautiful January morning.
Typically, January surf is not too big and on average it is around the chest to head high range with offshore winds in the morning. However, last January was a bit of an anomaly because we had some much bigger days in the overhead range. These swells were the same North Swells that hit Hawaii last year, and brought them a “100 year swell”. So, for January 2011, expect it to be a bit smaller because right now the way that the swells are shaping up in Hawaii doesn’t look too promising for this season.
There were many lay days in December for the three contests on the North Shore due to small swell. As a result, this January expect things to stay in the chest to head high range with a few days out of the month being in the head high plus range.
We get our howling Guanacaste or Papagayo winds in Jan, as well, so expect the wind to be offshore most mornings and some days where it stays offshore most of the day.
