December has been an epic month for surf. El Nino seems to be delivering more powerful Pacific storms already, so the signs are good. Early in the month a solid southwest swell lit up the north end of the beach, with super consistent hollow sets firing through. Following this, Typhoon Nida delivered a long period swell. So barrels were the go, as the swell came out of the North West direction hitting the southern, Looks good for January.

Green Surf - No to the tuna factories

Pavones and the Golfo Dulce remain under threat still. Southern Zone locals, fishermen, surfers, environmentalists and those with tourism-related businesses continue to fight efforts to put a tuna farm in this pristine part of Costa Rica. This issue has re-emerged, most recently, MINAET (Costa Rica’s Ministry of Environment, Energy, and Telecommunications) has just approved the project and now it’s in the hands of Granjas Atuneras, S.A. a Venezuelan and Spanish company, awaiting final approval. During the month of January C & C Surf School always sponsors a couple of surf events in Playa Samara. Kids Day, an activity organized by CREAR (Samara’s premier after-school program), brings kids of all ages to C & C for free surf lessons and other activities. This year we expect 50 or more children to participate. More >
