Nosara’s Fiestas, Second Round

By Arianna McKinney

It’s almost time for a second round of the Nosara fiestas, which will be held from Friday, April 12 to Monday, April 15, and hopes are that a similar amount of profit from the first Fiestas might be raised again.

Nosara’s January fiestas raised 12,506,292 colones (about $25,000), the best profit margin for community fiestas in the canton this year, according to Marcos Avila, president of the Nosara Integral Development Association (ADIN).

Fiesta-goers will notice a couple of changes this time.

For example, the dance hall has been eliminated. Instead, two mega bars with discos will be operating so that the public can dance for free throughout the weekend. Bull riding is set to start at 6 p.m. nightly (see The Bulls calendar).

Specific aspects of the fiestas have been delegated to different groups to support community projects. For example, funds raised by the bathrooms will support the construction of a center for the elderly. Both cantinas have been granted to the Bocas de Nosara High School Board of Directors, since the school needs a new cafeteria and new electrical wiring.

The horse parade, scheduled for Saturday the 13th at noon, has been awarded to the Pro-Roads Group of Arenales, a child group of the Development Association, to help channel waters from the San Juan hill in preparation for paving the roads there.

Another community that will benefit from the fiestas is Santa Teresa, where they are trying to raise funds to repair their community hall and install curbs and gutters to present the pavement project to the Ministry of Public Transportation (MOPT).

Avila explained that organized groups can be awarded aspects of the fiestas without having to go through the auction process; however they have to pay for the right just like anyone else. Although income from the April fiestas is traditionally a little less than from January fiestas, especially with the risk of rain, Avila noted that there are less expenses with the April fiestas since the structures are already built, which generally costs about 3 million colones ($6000).
