Montaña River Flooding May Wash Away Bridge Fill

The concern is twofold for the residents of Nosara when it comes to transit routes in their community. The roads are in poor condition and the Moñtana river bridge is unfinished.

Since the completion of the bridge was halted and the rainy season has begun, the locals took the situation into their own hands and decided to fill both approaches to the bridge with small stone (piedrilla). But if the National Highway Commission (CONAVI) does not reinforce the foundations of the bridge and finish the job, there is a risk that the structure will begin to fall apart.

Marco Avila, president of the Development Association of Nosara, told VON, that since the rain has already started, a group of residents used machinery to complete the ramps to the bridge. The issue now is that the rain has started to wash away the walls of the fill.

"We are concerned about the deterioration of the retaining walls, but even more so, when the current rises the sand will be washed away at the bases of the bridge. The bridge will be unusable and driving through the river is complicated" he told Avila.

Meanwhile, the CONAVI press office told VON that "The contracted company did not complete the work and left access blocked, it was the neighbors who enabled access to the bridge, but with the rain the walls of the bridge are falling. With a big flood, it will take away some of that sand and inhibit access. "

A history full of setbacks
The construction of the bridge over the Moñtana river has not been easy. In January of this year, Conavi paid 750 million colones to build a Bailey bridge 114 meters long, but only a few weeks later, it was determined that the bridge had to be expanded.

Costs increased and in mid-March there was an addendum to the contract that was submitted to the Comptroller of the Republic for approval, delaying the completion of the bridge for a month.

Just days after filing the addendum, the Vice Minister of Transport, Maria Lorena Lopez, resigned and the work remained suspended. CONAVI terminated the contract and instead sought another contractor.

Then came the problems of corruption in the Ministry of Public Works that were uncovered on the road in the northern zone, the famous Trocha, and the company that was hired to complete the access to the bridge, was ordered to leave the job, leaving the bridge unfinished.
