Enjoy Poetry and Messages in the Sidewalks of Nicoya

By Oliver Pérez

Nicoyans and visitors can check out some 50 verses of poetry, bombas (traditional rhymes) and Guanacaste-style messages along the principal roads of the city.

About 90 people joined together to participate in the “Ciudad Libro” (Book City) project on Wednesday, August 7, promoted by UNESCO and supported by the Municipality of Nicoya and the Universidad Nacional (National University). Participants included senior citizens, students from Saúl Cárdenas and Cacique Nicoa schools, Nicoyan singer-songwriter Max Goldemberg and Allan Seas, as well as students and professors from the Universidad Nacional.

The writings start in front of the Anexion hospital, pass through the Recaedo Briceño park and extend to the Universidad Nacional and will be on the sidewalks for about four months since they were made with plastic paint facilitated by UNESCO.

Angel Arenas, director of international relations for the UNESCO Center of Andalucia, Spain, told VON that Ciudad Libro forms part of a social innovation project called Poesible and has the general objective of promoting and developing the concept of culture and art as agents of human and social development.

“This is a pioneer intervention with the aim of highlighting the cultural and artistic magnitude of the city of Nicoya,” she said.

“This is the tenth city in the world that is doing this project, which initiated a year ago. Therefore we’re talking about an innovative strategy in the realm of intercultural sensitizing actions: on one hand, we get the youngest ones to participate in social changes and at the same time we make them transmit these changes in favor of a more open and harmonious society,” explained Arenas.

For her part, Marta Arauz, one of the participants, said she felt proud that Nicoya was taken into account for this project.

“I’ve dedicated a verse to the Indian. After finishing my contribution, I realized that we can continue extending this project to other streets. It’s very lovely that people can read our Guanacaste readings,” the Nicoyan expressed with happiness.
