Dinner and Fashion Show Raise Funds for Health Fair in Samara

By Arianna McKinney

On Saturday, August 11th, there was a remarkable turnout for the gala dinner held at Hotel Guanamar in Carrillo to raise funds for an upcoming health fair to be hosted in Samara December 7th and 8th, which will benefit surrounding communities as well.

A fundraising event like this has never been held in Samara before, according to Patsy Scott, founder and president of the Blue Zone Community Foundation (FCZA), who organizes the health fair, and she was very thankful for the support from the Samara business community.

The first health fair held in Samara last December was attended by about 500 people, with 20 specialists providing about 350 medical services free to the public, reported Xavi Palomar, vice president of the FCZA.

While last year’s fair was only one day, this year’s fair is planned for two days with even more specialists, he said.

Last year, Scott noted that many who attended were elderly, so this year she is inviting geriatric specialists and rheumatologists, among others.

All 80 tickets were sold at 25,000 colones each for the dinner, fashion show and dance with musical group Caldera, netting about 800,000 colones ($1600), enough to cover most of the costs of the health fair, according to Palomar. He explained that they decided that instead of asking for donations, it would be better to do something to raise funds and at the same time provide an opportunity for interchange. Thirteen countries were represented by those in attendance, he noted, and about 40% were Costa Rican.

Because of the rain, the fashion show that was originally scheduled to be held by the swimming pool had to be improvised and held within the dining area.  Nevertheless, the fashion show was a hit, with beach wear presented by two designers. Local designer Sandra Alan Seas of Boutique Shanna presented 15 pieces, specializing in bathing suits, along with hindu-style fashions and casual wear.

In addition, Anna Morris of Sweden showcased 12 pieces, some for kids, some for men, including Thailand-style fisherman’s pants modeled by her husband and 3-year-old son, who stole the show.

After the fashion show, two women and one man twirled balls of fire around poolside and guests headed over to the bar area to dance to Latin rhythms like bachata and salsa with live music from Caldera.
