5 Ways to Explore Guanacaste This Summer

Esta publicación también está disponible en: Español

Guanacaste is much more than sun, sand and blue ocean with white-crested waves. Volcanoes, historical sites, adventure, relaxation and safe locations for camping and sightseeing with the family mean that exploring the province requires more than just one season of obligatory visits.

The Voice of Guanacaste is here to help you choose from the many things to do, with the following list of vacation destinations:

1.   Historical Guanacaste:

The province has historical monuments and structures in nearly all of its 11 cantons.

The Abangares EcoMuseum, the Guanacaste Museum in Liberia, La Pacífica Estate, the San Blas Church in Nicoya, the old Chapel in Liberia and the Christ of Esquipulas tower in Santa Cruz are a few options for seeing some of the province’s historical architecture.

2. Guanacaste for Exploration:

If you’re looking to explore new places and hidden beaches unequaled for their scenic beauty, our recommendations are: Playa Callejones in the canton of Santa Cruz, Playa Cuarzo in Garza de Nicoya and Playa Pitahaya in Santa Cruz.

Read about more beaches to explore here: “Virgin Guanacaste.”

3. Alternative Guanacaste (without beaches):

If you prefer freshwater instead of ocean water, and you like trips to the mountains, forests, rivers and waterfalls, we recommend Cool Breeze Waterfalls in Tilarán, Palo Verde National Park in Bagaces, Salto del Calvo Waterfall in Hojancha, Las Pumas Wildlife Rescue Center in Cañas and Llano del Cortés Waterfalls in Bagaces.

4. Adventurous Guanacaste:

If a little adrenaline rush and adventure is what you’re after, you can swim with a horse in La Cruz, fly through the jungle on a canopy tour, go snorkeling or ride on ATV tours.

For surfers, Playa Guiones, Playa Barrigona, Playa Buena Vista, Playa Izquierda and Playa Camaronal are highly recommended.

Trips to the province’s volcanoes also are a great adventure tourism alternative.

5. Relaxing Guanacaste:

Many people come to Guanacaste just to relax. For those travelers, the province offers yoga in Playa Avellanas, Playa Guiones, Nosara and Sámara.

You can also spend quality time with your family at Playa Ocotal, Playa Potrero, Junquillal Bay or Playa Rajada.
