What makes us Guanacastecan?

Costa Ricans often refer to Guanacaste as a “separate country.” The uniqueness of this northwestern province isn’t only reflected in its kitchens, suntanned bodies or dry heat, but also in ongoing economic and social realities.

 

What is it that makes Guanacastecans, foreigners and the internal migrants who live here unique? The National Statistics and Census Institute’s 2015 National Household Survey reveals a broad panorama of Guanacastecans and how they live. The Voice of Guanacaste analyzed the survey’s database. Following are some insightful trends we discovered.
