On Sunday, August 11, the “Carrera por mi Parroquia” (Race for My Parish) will be held as part of an effort to raise funds to build a new Catholic church in Nosara since the church building had to be demolished due to damage sustained during the earthquake on September 5, 2012.

Lorena Avila Alvarado, president of the Parish Events Committee, said they have been holding a series of athletic events as fundraisers, including a cycling event and a soccer tournament. So far, they have raised about 1,400,000 colones ($2800), and they plan to continue holding these types of healthy, wholesome events until they have enough money to begin construction, although at this point they don’t know when that might be.

The race will begin at 7 a.m. and will include two route options, both beginning and ending at the church property. The 5-kilometer race will follow the road through San Pedro and Los Arenales and then from La Casona return to the church. The more challenging 10-kilometer course will extend from Los Arenales along the road toward the garbage dump. Registration fees are 5000 or 8000 colones respectively ($10 or $16).

A cash prize will be awarded for first, second and third places, and runners will compete in age groups of 0 to 40 and 40 up in men’s and women’s categories. Runners can register at in Tienda Steven in the center of Nosara, in Tienda Regalomix after the entrance of Santa Marta or in Tienda Galaxi in Nicoya.
