In Samara, three popular hangouts have recently changed hands, each with their own plans for maintaining and improving the establishment. The first business to come under new ownership was Bar Arriba on main street, which was bought on May 1st by four partners: Tico Cristian Goussen and Canadians Sean Rajkumar, Kris Charthan and Shea Tuuqrlow.
“We continue being the same Arriba, but better,” promised Goussen, though they will close in October to remodel the kitchen and bathrooms and install plasma screens and a projector.
The menu now includes some new cocktails, like the Cocktail Arriba for 3000 colones ($6), which includes Milroy (melon liquor), Malibu, pineapple juice and cranberry, with free chips and salsa. They are also running two for one specials and free shots and hosting nightly activities including ladies night on Mondays, hip-hop night on Wednesdays, roof on fire parties on Fridays and guys night on Saturdays. Bar Arriba is open from 5 p.m. to 2:30 a.m., closed on Tuesdays.
On May 6, Scott Daily, from Los Angeles, took over La Vela Latina, located on the beach 400 meters east of the police station. “I really don’t plan on changing much,” he affirmed. “I like the food, I like the staff; I´m just trying to improve it.”
Mondays continues to be sushi night with two for one rolls, but now on Sundays he is projecting a movie on a white wall and providing free popcorn. The movie is chosen weekly by voting via Facebook: beach bar la vela latina.
In addition, they are doing beach games like horseshoes and offering boca and beer specials, such as a beer with chifrijo for 1500 colones ($3) or with ceviche or seafood soup for 2000 colones ($4).
Each night they are also showing extreme sports movies including surfing and snowboarding. La Vela Latina is open daily from 11 a.m. to midnight.
Starting June 1, Bar Las Olas has been rented for four years by Nicolas Moreira, originally from Chile but raised in Sweden, and change is in the air, beginning with a new bamboo-skirted bar, since the old bar was not hygienic, according to Moreira.
The place will also be getting a new roof, fresh blue and beige paint and new chairs, a facelift that Moreira said will take several months. He is also adding a projector to host sports nights, movie nights and surfing nights with surf movies and photos.
In addition, he is offering many happy hours from 4 to 7 p.m. and from 10 p.m. until close, as well as activities on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays “so people start to come to Olas more.” Bar Las Olas is located on Samara Beach, about 200 meters west of the police station.
