A caravan of literature, music, and several cultural activities will take over Nicoya’s sports center on Friday, March 3, and Saturday, March 4, in celebration of the Nicoya Book Fair.
Those who attend will be able to find the best of Costa Rican literature with discounts of up to 50%, according to the director of the University of Costa Rica Publishing House, Alexander Jiménez. This publisher is organizing the event.
“With this activity, we want to encourage literature and fulfill the commitment that public universities have with the country’s communities,” said Jiménez.
Publishers from the country’s public universities and other independent ones such as Abecedaria Editoras, La Jirafa y Yo, Círculo y Punto Ediciones and Uruk Editores will participate in the activity.
The Voice of Guanacaste will also have a booth launching its book Cuentos de Guanacaste para niñas poderosas (Stories from Guanacaste for Powerful Girls), a book that profiles the exciting lives of eight Guanacaste women. In addition, it will have merchandise and other original products from the IDENTITY line.
María Fernanda Cruz, executive director of The Voice, commented that this is an effort to show the path that Guanacaste women opened (and continue to open) for girls who live in the province.
At The Voice, we deeply admire the ability that girls and boys have to observe and be surprised by everything that surrounds them, to ask everything with scientific curiosity and to open their eyes to the beauties and inconsistencies of the world. That’s why we decided to create this book,” she commented.
The book describes volunteer firefighter Lucrecia Pastrana, scientist Jennifer Powell, the founder of Coopetortillas, Margarita Marchena, and the world champion of adapted surfing, Jimena Ruiz.
It also tells the story of marimba player María Bolandi, the advocate of Guanacaste’s culture, Lía Bonilla, the first female representative of Guanacaste, Rosa Alpina, and writer María Leal.
Cuentos de Guanacaste para niñas poderosas will have a special price of ¢5,000 (about $9) during the days of the fair, Friday, March 3rd and Saturday, March 4th.
More Surprises
The fair will feature the Bus of the Arts, a bus that turns into a stage to host dancing, poetry readings, book presentations and concerts.
In addition, there will be the release of free books at the sports center and an auction of works, activities that will be part of the fair but that you won’t see on the schedule because they are surprises.
Guanacaste singer-songwriter Max Goldenberg will be in charge of the closing event. His presentation will take place on Saturday, March 4 at 7 p.m.

The fair is part of the Reading and Arts Caravan, a new project by UCR Publishing House that aims to bring literature and art to different communities in the country.
According to Jiménez, the next districts that the fair will visit are Liberia and Golfito.
