The possibility of prohibiting the purchase and sale of alcoholic beverages on Sunday, February 2 – Election Day – was unable to gain support from the majority of Nicoya’s Municipal Council members.

Ana Lizeth Espinoza, president of the Municipal Council, explained that the proposal from the January 20 municipal session, which included the regulation during the polls, was neither formalized nor approved, so businesses will be allowed to sell alcohol as usual.

For his part, Marco Jimenez, the municipal mayor, stated that the best option is to permit the normal sale of liquor, as forbidding it always favors those who sell liquor illegally.

Jimenez recalled that during last Holy Week, when there was no dry law enacted, there weren’t additional problems in the canton.
