On Monday, December 22, a 43-year-old swimmer was found dead on the shore of Garza Beach in the district of Nosara. The deceased, Wilberth Villarreal, lived in Barco Quebrado in the district of Samara.

According to the Nosara Red Cross’s report, they were alerted of the presence of a body on the beach at 7:20 a.m. by area residents, so they went immediately. However, when they arrived, Villarreal was already dead.

Adriana Camareno, Nosara Red Cross administrator, said that when the paramedics arrived at the scene, there was no way to help the victim.

“In effect, unit 484 had to handle an emergency yesterday morning (Monday) in the Nosara beach area. This has to do with a swimmer who went into the ocean and lost his life, drowning due to unknown circumstances. When the paramedics arrived at the scene, there was no longer anything that could be done since the person was found deceased,” Camareno commented.

According to Adolfo Saenz, spokesman for the Nicoya Red Cross, this is the first drowning to be recorded in the canton for the holiday season in December.
